Stem-leaf diagram

A stem-leaf diagram (or stem-leaf diagram) is a way of preparing unordered data for statistical investigations. The data is split into a stem part and a leaf part.

Statistical investigations are usually based on an evaluation of relatively large amounts of data. It is useful to prepare the data collected in an original list, usually in an unordered form, for further work. In the stem-leaf diagram, the individual data is split into a "stem" and a "leaf" component. For example, the hundreds or tens of the data are selected as the stem values, and the units are selected as the leaf values.
